While file cabinets can be made out of several different materials, none add to the decor of an office like wood file cabinets. Some are made of solid wood while others are made of particle board with a wood grain veneer. Most sizes and styles of file cabinets can be found made of wood or with a wood finish.
File cabinets can be give a wood finish in three ways. One option is for the entire cabinet to be made of solid wood. In wooden file cabinets, the sides and bottoms of the drawers being made of wood with either grooves carved into the edges or metal rails screwed into the side for hanging files to hang from. These file cabinets tend to be more expensive than others due to the craftsmanship and materials needed. Some file cabinets with a wood finish are made from particle board. These tend to be cheaper than cabinets made from solid wood, but they don't last as long. The third option is to have a metal file cabinet with wood facings on the top, sides, and drawer fronts. There is such a wide variety of stains and veneers available that it is possible to get a file cabinet that matches the other wood furniture in your office.

There are wooden file cabinets available in all three styles. Cabinets in which the files lie flat are usually used for oversized files like maps, art, and blueprints. The drawers tend to be very wide and shallow. Cabinets in which the files face forward tend to stick out further from the wall than those in which the files face to the side. Cabinets in which the files face to the side tend to need more wall space than those in which the files face front. Your office size and layout will be one of the determining factors as to which style of cabinet is the best fit.
Many people feel that wooden file cabinets give an office a warmer, more welcoming feel than do metal file cabinets. The wood of the file cabinet can be matched to other wood in the office, giving a cohesive feel to the office decor. Cabinets made from solid wood tend to be more expensive than the others, but also tend to be more durable and last longer than the others. These file cabinets can be found at most office supply stores and at some furniture stores, especially those that specialize in making solid wood furniture.
